You Don’t Need to Be an Expert to Be a Thought Leader

When you hear the words “thought leader,” do you picture someone with a fancy stage, a best-selling book, and way more followers than you?

Yeah, I used to think that way too. And honestly? That’s the problem.

We’ve turned “thought leadership” into this huge, untouchable thing. Like it’s only for people who’ve “made it.” But the truth is, leadership isn’t about your resume. It’s about your perspective.

So, what is it, really?

Thought leadership just means you have a unique opinion and you’re willing to share it.

That’s it. You don’t need 10 years in the industry. You don’t need a certification on the wall. You just need to notice something other people are missing and say it out loud.

The “I’m not an expert” trap

A lot of coaches and consultants stay quiet because they think, “Who am I to have an opinion on this?”

But your experience IS expertise. Every client conve

rsation, every mistake you’ve made, every “aha” moment you’ve had… that’s all stuff nobody else has. That’s your angle.

You don’t need to know everything about a topic. You just need to know your slice of it really well.

Why people follow “thought leaders”

It’s not because they’re the smartest person in the room. It’s because they say the thing everyone else is thinking but afraid to say.

Think about the accounts you follow. Are they perfect? Probably not. But they probably make you think, “huh, I never looked at it that way” or “finally, someone said it.”

That’s the goal. Not perfection. Perspective.

How to start (without overthinking it)

Next time you’re scrolling and think “hmm, I don’t totally agree with that”, pay attention. That little spark of disagreement? That’s your content idea.

Write down what you’d say differently, and why. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to start the conversation.
