Honestly, my first thought was, “What a waste of money for those business cards!” After all, most of them were thrown in the trash after the event because people didn’t even remember who he was!
It was kind of comical, actually. Because I saw him come in and had the advantage of watching him circle the room. When he got to me, I attempted to strike up a conversation with him, but, alas, his mind was already on the next person, so, with a chuckle, I just let him go do his thing.
Successful networking isn’t about collecting business cards – it’s about showing up as yourself and making genuine connections that transform into real business relationships.
Here are a few ideas that you can implement right away:

Here’s a transformative truth: You don’t need to work the entire room. Quality conversations trump quantity every time. When you focus on making meaningful connections, your networking naturally becomes more effective.
Pre-Event Strategy.
Your preparation makes all the difference. Take time to:
- Research who’s attending
- Identify 3-5 key people you’d love to connect with
- Prepare questions that show you understand their business challenges
- Set clear intentions for the connections you want to make
During the Event.
Here’s your implementation strategy:
- Arrive early to settle in and meet people in a calmer environment
- Start with one meaningful conversation rather than rushing to meet everyone (no card tossing!)
- Be authentic
- Listen more than you talk – this is where the real connections happen

Online networking groups are where your uniqueness can truly shine! These focused communities provide rich opportunities for building meaningful connections in your industry. Whether you’re participating in professional associations, industry forums, or specialized networking groups, you have the perfect platform to meet and connect with potential new clients and collaborators.
Virtual Industry Groups
- Industry-specific networking organizations
- Professional association online communities
- Chamber of Commerce virtual meetups
- Trade organization forums
- Specialized mastermind groups
Here’s your implementation strategy:
- Do your research. Check out the groups and make sure it is the right group for you and your business.
- Be prepared. Have your ‘one-liner’ memorized and ready to go. (A lot of online meetings only give you 1 minute to give your “pitch.”)
- Go in with one focus only. If you have a new program, a social page you want them to join, a challenge, etc. One meeting – one focus.
- Smile and have fun! Your energy comes through the screen. People remember people who bring the fun, positive energy to the room.
Take Action (Because that’s what this is all about!)
Your roadmap to networking success:
- Choose your focus (Don’t try to be everywhere; be present where it matters.)
- Select one in-person event and one online event to attend in the next month.
- Set concrete networking goals for the next 3 months.
- Block out specific times in your calendar for networking activities.
- Attend all networking meetings with a purpose.
- Be present.
- Don’t do all the talking. Listen with purpose.
- Create a follow-up system that works for you (The fortune is in the follow-up!)
- Track your results and celebrate wins.
- Adjust your approach based on what works best (Live events, online, or a combo.)
Don’t be like “that guy”. Don’t be a serial business card tosser. Networking is about meeting new people and building new relationships. You certainly can’t do that in 2 minutes.
The best networking strategy is one that feels authentic while delivering consistent results. Your unique approach to connecting with others is your biggest asset in building meaningful business relationships.
You don’t need to be the loudest in the room or the most active online – you just need to be genuinely yourself while consistently showing up and adding value.
Start by implementing just one strategy from this guide, then build from there, step by step.
