Ever been to a party and someone asks, “So, what do you do?” Do you stumble over your words or give a long, confusing answer? Don’t worry – you’re not alone!
The key here is preparation. Specifically, with what I call your “perfect one-liner.”
What’s a One-Liner?
A one-liner is like a movie trailer for your business. It’s that short, clear and engaging sentence that makes people say, “Tell me more!” It’s not your whole story – it’s just the hook that gets people interested.
Why Your One-Liner Matters
Think about the last time you watched Netflix. You probably read the short description of a show before deciding to watch it, right? Your one-liner works the same way. It helps people quickly understand:
- If you’re the right person to help them
- What problems you solve
- Why they should care
The Key a Great One-Liner
Follow these steps to create your perfect one-line intro:
- Start with who you help
- Add their biggest problem
- Tell them the amazing result you deliver
- Tell them how
For example:
❌ “I’m a business coach who helps people grow their companies.”
✅ “I help overwhelmed business owners double their income while working less using my proprietary The Abundance Accelerator program.”
See the difference? The second one makes you want to learn more!
Real-Life Examples That Work
Here are a few before-and-after examples to consider:
Before: “I’m a fitness trainer.”
After: “I help busy moms get fit in just 20 minutes a day using my proprietary Naptime Fitness program.
Before: “I’m a social media consultant.”
After: “I help local restaurants fill their tables using my proprietary Full House Formula methodology.”
Before: “I’m a life coach.”
After: “I help people who hate their jobs find their dream career in 90 days using my proprietary 90 Days to Freedom program.”
How to Create Your Own One-Liner
Ready to write yours? Answer these four questions:
- Who exactly do you help? (Be super specific!)
- What’s their biggest headache?
- What awesome change do you create for them?
- How do you do it? (Your proprietary program, formula, methodology, etc.)
Put those answers together, and boom – you’ve got your one-liner!
Rookie Mistakes to Avoid
Don’t fall into these common traps:
- Using fancy words nobody understands (no jargon!)
- Trying to include everything you do
- Making it too long
- Being too vague
Take Action!
Here’s your homework: Take 5 minutes right now to write your one-liner. Then try it out on a friend. If they immediately understand what you do and who you help – you nailed it!
A perfect one-liner isn’t about being clever – it’s about being clear. Keep it simple, focus on results, and watch people’s eyes light up when you tell them what you do!
