What if being busy is actually the problem, not the solution?
I used to think a packed calendar meant I was crushing it. My to-do list was always full. My days were always moving. But at the end of the week, I’d look back and wonder, did I actually move forward? Or did I just answer 47 emails and never touch the proposal due Friday?
Sound familiar? You’re not alone.
The days fill up fast. Emails, calls, quick tasks. But the big stuff, the work that actually grows your business, keeps getting pushed to tomorrow.
Why Busy Isn’t the Same as Productive
Being busy feels good. It feels like progress. But busy and productive are not the same thing.
Research shows it takes about 23 minutes to get your focus back after an interruption. That means every ping, pop-up, and “quick question” is costing you way more than you think.
Focus is what helps you do the things that actually matter. Not just cross items off a list but make sure you’re working on the right things.
3 Simple Ways to Find Your Focus
The good news? You don’t need
a total life overhaul. Small shifts work. Here are three that help most people right away:
1. Block Out Distractions
Pick one hour each morning and protect it like a meeting with your most important client. Silence your phone. Close your email. Let people know you’re not available. Even one quiet hour can help you finally finish that project you’ve been putting off for weeks.
2. Work in Short, Focused Bursts
Try working for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. It sounds simple, becau
se it is. These short bursts help your brain stay sharp without burning out. Most people are shocked by how much they get done when they stop multitasking and just focus on one thing at a time.
3. Write Down Your #1 Goal Each Morning
Every morning, write down the ONE thing you most need to finish that day. Put it on a sticky note right by your computer. When distractions pop up (and they will), glance at your note and ask yourself, “Is what I’m doing right now helping me get THIS done?”
Try It This Week
You don’t have to do all three at once. Just pick one and try it today.
Notice how it feels to actually finish something that matters. Not just stay busy but make real progress on the work that moves your business forward.
It’s not about being the busiest person in the room. It’s about being the most intentional one.
